Snorkel Thailand’s Best Destinations

To snorkel Thailand’s reefs is like being in another world

Andaman Snorkel Discovery’s snorkel liveaboard boat offers you the chance to snorkel Thailand’s best destinations. Thailand in general is a great location for snorkelling. Both in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand.

Warm, clear waters are teeming with exotic tropical fish. There are colourful corals and giant seafans forming wonderful scenery underwater. To snorkel Thailand’s reefs is like being in another world. If you have never snorkelled before in tropical waters then it is an amazing experience.

Many refer to it being like in a BBC or National Geographic nature documentary.

The Similan and Surin Islands

The Similan Islands make for best Thailand Snorkeling

If you want to snorkel Thailand’s best, then the Similan Islands and Surin Islands are the place go. The Similan and Surin Islands are situated off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Khao Lak is considered the best starting point to experience these fantastic islands. The Islands are approximately 65kms from the mainland. Due to their location, far from land, the conditions are perfect for snorkeling.

The water visibility is generally very clear, the islands are not affected by rivers flowing from the mainland. Open ocean currents supply the ecosystem with nutrient rich food, sometimes enough to bring in Giant manta rays and whale sharks. Both locations are also Marine National Parks. This is why the Similans Islands all the way up to the  Surin Islands are considered to be the best in snorkel spots in Thailand.

A Giant Manta Ray at Koh Bon

Koh Bon

Koh Bon is located between the famous Similan Islands and Koh Tachai. It is known locally as the middle island. Koh Bon differs dramatically from the Similan Islands in it’s topography. Koh Bon has a different look and feel to it. It is also of great importance to the largest ray that migrates through Thai waters.

Koh Tachai Snorkelling

Another ‘must’ when snorkelling in the Similan National Park is a visit to Koh Tachai. This island is an amazing paradise destination with crystal clear turquoise waters and fine white sandy beaches, all lined with lush rainforest. Snorkelling here is an exciting experience, often with large schools of barracuda.

In 2016 Koh Tachai was closed as a snorkelling day trip destination. Though we can no longer visit the amazing beach there we are still permitted to snorkel at one of the best sites in the Andaman Sea, Koh Tachai Pinnacle. Being the only snorkellers there is one aspect that makes a liveaboard with Andaman Snorkel Discovery better than all the rest.

A 3 day 3 night Similan snorkeling liveaboard with Andaman Snorkel Discovery is the best way to take in the beautiful snorkel destinations in the Similan Islands and Surin Islands. This is the only Thailand snorkel liveaboard that visits both these National Parks and it is also the only trip that covers 4 days, starting on the evening of day 1 so that you can wake up at the snorkel destination in the morning before anyone gets there.

It is these details that we feel are important, that make your trip the most fun, relaxing and unforgettable experience possible. These are the reasons why you should choose Andaman Snorkel Discovery for your Similan snorkeling liveaboard.

Koh Surin Snorkeling

The real highlight with an Andman Snorkel Discovery snorkeling liveaboard is the time we have in the Surin Islands. No other snorkel liveaboard makes this stop and it is truly special. With Ralf’s experience and love of this section of National Park we have managed to uncover some fascinating and exciting snorkel discoveries. Our number one highlight of the whole trip is when we visit the baby sharks basking in the mangroves. A visit to their territory really is a treat and an honour. We do this when tides allow and take a traditional Moken Long Tail boat over.

on our Similan Snorkeling Liveaboard

As well as snorkeling Thailand’s best sites there is plenty of time for beach visits or simply to relax rocking gently on the boat. We serve delicious Thai food and our staff are always on hand to make sure you have a fun and unforgettable time. Even if you don’t see yourself as the most enthusiastic snorkeller there is plenty to offer on our snorkel liveaboard.

There is an abundance of nature to marvel at on the Surin Islands and Koh Tachai. We even throw in some cultural experiences too. You will get the chance to visit the Moken who inhabit the Surin Islands and learn something of their culture and folklore. We have even been know to participate in classes in the small school on the island!

Snorkelling Thailand's best destinations

Snorkel Thailand’s best

To snorkel Thailand’s best locations it would be hard to make the choice of which islands to visit. Snorkelling each destination on four consecutive days as day trips would be a time consuming part of your holiday. Not to mention uncomfortable transfer to and from the islands on cramped speedboats. Also, some of the Islands are not offered as a regular day trip.

To fully experience the most from these great Thailand snorkel spots, our snorkeling liveaboard is the best way. Our snorkel liveaboard departs in the evening so the next day you wake up around the beautiful islands. Over the next three days we cover all the highlights from the Similan Islands, Koh Bon, Koh Tachai and the Surin Islands.

Surin Islands

The Surin Islands are often over shadowed by their famous neighbours, the Similan Islands. For snorkelers the Surin Islands actually have a lot more appeal. Beneath the warm, shallow waters that surround the islands, there are extensive coral reef ecosystems. The Surin Islands have made a name for themselves as the best Thailand snorkel destination.

Koh Tachai

Koh Tachai is the most northerly island before you reach the Surin Islands. Like the Similan Islands, huge granite boulders, dense tropical rainforest dominate the scene, surrounded by the turquoise warm waters of the Andaman Sea. The beach at Koh Tachai is the most beautiful in all of the Similan National Park.
